On January 6, 1978, members of various antiabortion groups staged a nationwide protest. In conjunction with that movement, members of Alaska Right to Life staged a demonstration outside of the building housing the Alaska Hospital and the Alaska Clinic in Anchorage. Having decided that they had "tried everything else" and that it was necessary "to try... peacefully to stop the taking of human life," appellants Head, Fardig, Siegfried and Cleveland entered the Alaska Clinic to conduct a more emphatic protest than the one in progress outside the building. Head and Siegfried proceeded to attach themselves to the door of the Clinics operating room with handcuffs and chains, while Cleveland and Fardig handcuffed themselves to the operating table.
